This course is designed to introduce the various disciplines of Social Studies to incoming freshmen. Units covered include Critical Thinking, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, History, Geography, and Economics.

U.S. History   

Year Course

Grade 11    

 1 Credit

The aim of this course is to instruct and excite students about our country’s past and to help them master history study skills vital to a real understanding of the United States Historical development.  The struggles and accomplishments of all Americans, including diverse ethnic and minority groups are presented.  There is also an emphasis on historiography and various interpretations of key historical events.

American Government Semester Course
Grade 10     ˝ Credit
Designed to meet requirements of the State of Illinois, this course provides study of the state and U.S. Constitutions and the U.S. flag code. Successful completion of exams on U.S. Constitution, Illinois Constitution, and the U.S. flag are mandatory for graduation.

World History Year Course
Grades 10-12  1 Credit
This course presents the achievements of people throughout the world since ancient times, and explains how these achievements have led or contributed to western civilization. An attempt is made to provide a balanced treatment of important developments, events, and trends that help the students gain understanding of the past.

Geography  Semester Course
Grades 10-12   ˝ Credit
The goal of this course is to explain and discuss the differences in physical and cultural geography.  The inter-relationship between people’s culture and their environment and parts of the environment that will affect them all their lives will be studied: These include:  the solar system, weather and climate, physical regions of the world with an emphasis on North America.

Current Issues  Year Course
Grades 10 – 12     1 Credit
Current issues is a study of the major areas of today’s world, including the geography, modern history, and culture of those areas.  Emphasis will be placed on the global interdependence of our world today.  Current problems of these areas will be studied through the use of newspapers, news magazines, television, and movies.

Civics Semester Course

The purpose of this course is to teach citizenship rights and expectations in a democratic society. There is also an emphasis on the role government plays in out lives.

Psychology Semester Course
Grade 10-12    1 Credit

The course is geared to the college bound student and is designed to provide the student with a background for the entry level college psychology class. The course is centered on a textbook. Areas of study include, but not limited to, learning, motivation personality, cognition, perception, emotions, biological psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, social psychology, and psychotherapy.

This course is designed for the college bound student. The course is centered around a text. Areas of study include socialization, society stratification, instructions, inequity, social control, and social structure.
