Board Meeting Summary for
November 15, 2016
The Morrisonville Board of Education met on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Unit Office. The following Board members were present: Ed Goebel, Bob Gowin, Gerry Goebel, Bryan Fesser, Bobbie Harker, Dale Brockamp and Kevin Moomey. Also present were Superintendent Gary DePatis and principals Ann Little and Christy Willman.
Elementary PE teacher, Jenny Meyer began the meeting with a brief presentation on the new standards and curriculum for elementary students, (K-6) in PE. The newest requirement for the PE standards is the Fitness Gram Testing that is now required by the ISBE. This includes, paced running, flexibility, push-ups and sit-ups. The data is submitted to the state anonymously with only percentages of students achieving at the different levels being reported. The new PE standards have gone from being skill and game based to fitness based beginning in 2013-2014. Mrs. Meyer reported that the students seem to enjoy the new activities for the most part but noted that as with any activity you don’t get 100% of the students liking what you are doing but that it really isn’t any different than she has noticed before.
Principal Willman reported that elementary teachers and staff have achieved their goal of contacting all students’ parent/guardian this year. She also told the Board about the successful book fair and Family Night that took place during the week of November 8th.
Mrs. Willman also reported that the Fannie May candy sale was a great success raising almost $8000 for the elementary school this year. It was also noted that this fund raiser is done every other year so as to not overwhelm the community with fundraising activities.
Ms. Little updated the Board on the new Renaissance Program that seems to be very successful at the Jr/Sr High School. The program rewards student for getting good grades and having good behavior as well as attending sporting and other extra-curricular events to support their classmates. The program is being coordinated by the student council with the school counselor Ms. Williams doing the record keeping for the students to achieve the different levels and rewards.
Superintendent DePatis told the Board that we have been able to find a person to assist with the JH basketball program. His name is Jim Elder and has helped coach JH basketball at Morrisonville in the past.
Mr. DePatis updated the Board on the search for an Ag teacher and FFA advisor. So far he has received 3 applicants for the position but expects to get more in the next week or so. He will be looking to begin conducting interviews soon.
Superintendent DePatis also went through the preliminary levy with the Board. Based on the information provided by the Christian and Montgomery County Clerks, the EAV for the district looks to increase by approximately 7%. Under the school code if the levy requested is more than 5% more than the previous year’s taxes then the district must hold a truth in taxation hearing. Because the EAV has risen by 7% this will require the levy to more than a 5% increase and we will have to hold a hearing. Mr. DePatis also explained that by using the facilities tax money received by the district, the board can abate a large portion of the bond payments that are outstanding and therefore keep the overall tax rate at approximately the same level as it was this past year. This would mean that if property taxes would be going up it would be mainly due to the property being worth more than it was in the past.
Mr. DePatis also informed the board concerning the barrel roof on the high school gym. It seemed that the roof had had some damage from high winds. After contacting the insurance company and filing a claim, it was determined by the insurance company that the damage was consistent with aging of the roof and therefore not allowable for payment on the insurance policy. However, the roof needs to be replace or we would see continued damage, which could lead to moisture getting the gym floor and causing damage there and making the cost increase immensely. He recommended to the board to accept a proposal to replace the roof with Joiner Sheet Metal and Roofing at a cost of $49,350.
The following action was taken by the Board during the meeting.
The next regular Board meeting will take place on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 7:00 PM.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:30 PM.
