The Morrisonville Board of Education met on Thursday, October, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Unit Office. The following Board members were present: Ed Goebel, Bob Gowin, Gerry Goebel, Bryan Fesser, Bobbie Harker and Kevin Moomey. Also present were Superintendent Gary DePatis and principals Ann Little and Christy Willman.
The meeting began with several 8th grade students from Mrs. Montgomery’s class talking to the Board about some of the projects they have been doing. The students were Paige Sheedy, Isaac Ferrill and Larry Scott. They showed the Board their painted gourd birdhouses as well as their class sketchbooks in which they normally add two sketches each week as part of the course. These students along with others also went to “The Homestead”, assisted living facility to perform skits for the residents there. The residents have asked for the student to return and perform again in the spring and the students are looking forward to going back.
Principal Little reported that they have completed many of the safety drills that we must do each year. The staff will participate in an active shooter drill on Friday afternoon, October 21, 2016 as part of the teacher in-service that day after the students have left. This is done for the entire district in cooperation with the Christian County Sheriff’s office. She also reported on the MAP testing that was completed in September which gives the base line data for the student in Morrisonville CUSD #1. This will allow the staff to see the student growth when the students take the test again this winter and then again in the spring.
Ms. Little also told the Board of the new Renaissance Program for the Jr/Sr High School students. This program is designed to reward the positive behaviors of our students and help to promote that behavior. Students earn points for the positive things they do like perfect attendance and grade point average, (GPA), as well as supporting their fellow students at sporting events and music/drama programs. As the students earn points they can achieve Platinum, Gold or Silver levels which give the students rewards.
She also informed the Board that the high school play will be performed on Friday, November 4th at 7:00 pm in the elementary all-purpose room.
Principal Christy Willman also reported on the MAP Testing giving the baseline data for the elementary students. She also reported that the Fannie Mae candy sale was a successful fundraiser once again for the school.
Mrs. Willman told the Board that the fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held during the week of November 7-10 this year. The Family Night will be on Tuesday, November 8th and family and friends are invited to join the students for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday that week. Those wishing to eat lunch will need to contact the office in advance so that we can have an accurate count for the cafeteria.
Superintendent DePatis told the Board that the numbers for the JH basketball program are high enough to need an additional assistant coach and at this point we have been unable to find an applicant for the position.
Mr. DePatis also wanted guidance from the Board on the Ag program for the district. If the Board truly wants to reinstate the program then we should start looking now to find the best possible person for the position and know what we courses can be offered for registration in February/March. The Board directed Mr. DePatis to post the position to begin the search.
The following action was taken by the Board during the meeting.
- Approved the resolution to abate $75,000 from the Working Cash fund to the Operations & Maintenance fund as is included in the district budget
- Approve the 1st reading of policies 2:70, 6:100 and 8:110
The next regular Board meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 7:00 PM. This is a change from the normal schedule due to the annual school board conference which takes place later that week.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:30 PM.
